Last Week

This week we went to Eureka for church, and it was mega awesome! We got to stay for all 3 hours, and the members were pretty happy! They were doing the primary program, and so that was the most adorable thing ever. The Spirit was there!

We got to attend and participate in 2 baptisms this weekend, and that was pretty special. Always awesome to see people take those special ordinances upon them and see the look in their eyes.

Our ghetto-present

We went to a kids birthday party that someone we're teaching invited us to, and we made a ghetto-gift-bag! It had a Kids Spanish "Book of Mormon Stories" in it, and some Star Wars action figures that we found in the apartment. #satisfactory
But we were kinda just chilling there at the party awkwardly because we didn't really know anybody, and then I decided that I hate being awkward so we started up a convo with some random peeps and had a grand old time! We invited some of them to play soccer with us, and we might start teaching one of them in the future!

Food because food is life

Not much else happened this week. Some interesting developments went on that I don't think I can talk much about because it has to do with Immigration, but it was a unique experience to console a family in their time of sorrow and need. It felt good to "comfort those that stand in need of comfort!"

This is my last full week of service as a missionary, and I am determined to make it my best week yet! It doesn't really feel real! But yeah, it's gonna be a blast and I love being a missionary.

Hope everyone has a great week! Bye!
Joaquin, our investigator, is progressing great. Still livin' those 'mandments, and still comin' to church! He is on track and we are pumped!

We are also pumped for our huge FIESTA this weekend! I'm pretty sure I have mentioned it before, but our Branch is putting on a big party for the 10th anniversary of it's existence, so we are doggone going big! There's gonna be mexican folk dancers, tons of food, carne, dancing, bounce houses, you name it! So we are really hoping a lot of people come, and we are gonna be ready to talk to everyone! Pictures of it next week, don' worry!
Check it, we went to EUREKA this week! BBBBoom! And do a double take; we found THREE new investigators there!!! DDDDouble Boom! So Eureka is a tiny little old mining town in the middle of nowhere, and there's a Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints there! And we cover it! So we go out about once a month, and this time we set our selves up nice and worked extra hard and found ourselves some pineapples out there! The branch is super pumped, because that's like the first investigators that have been found in a very long time out there, and each of them could easily be baptized within a few months. So we are super happy about that.

From last week

Woah! Not a lot of time, so here are a few highlights!

- Found 2 new investigators this week, things are great!
- There are literally all of the spiders in our apartment. We just got a bug fogger and its about to go down...
- There are just some awesome people we are teaching that are really ready to change their lives, so thats the sweetest.
- Really sore because Monday's we go kinda crazy: Cross-Fit in the morning, soccer with investigators right after, and then sports with the other missionaries later in the day. #GettinFit
- Hmm I'm not thinking of much else to mention. But I hope you enjoy the pictures!
We have been having a blast here in Elko. Tons of things getting up and running, and we are so pumped. Our branch is going to be putting on a massive fiesta for the 10th anniversary of the branch's creation, and it's going to be tubular. There's going to be food trucks, latino dancers, music, activities, and our Branch President is expecting 200+ non-members there! Like the goal is to get every Hispanic in Elko to be there! So we are super animated and ready to get it going.
As well, here's some other fun news. In our mission there is this thing called "morning program" where missionaries can get together every morning and play sports at a church building for their exercise. Well President Godoy has been attending a few of them, and feels that it's not effective for missionaries to do any more, so he cancelled it. Now this caused some legit mass hysteria, but everything is leveling out! We as well were un poquito bummed, but we noticed some people working out in a garage across the street from where we live. So we walked on by to check it out and say hello, and they asked us if we wanna work out with them! So this lady is a cross-fit trainer, and she just runs a full cross fit gym out of her garage, so we have been working out with them! It's a lot of fun and hopefully will pump us up every morning! Also, I'm fat so maybe this is a blessing in disguise!

OMG I ALMOST FORGOT WE WENT TO THE STAR (look it up)

We got to go down to Eureka for church this week, and it was so good to see everybody there. When we began sacrament meeting, there were about 15 of us there. But as the Lord says, "Where there are two or three of you gathered together in my name, there will I be in the midst of them." And that's how it was! We got up to introduce ourselves and bear our testimonies, and in that little living-room sized chapel, I felt the spirit re-confirm to me the importance of gathering together in His name to partake of the sacrament. Awesome trip.

Not much else crazy this week, but I hope everyone has a magnificent week!
Last week we got transfer info, and Elder Johnson was transferred to Carson City, and I received Elder Flores! He was raised in both Honduras and Colombia, but moved to Florida about 2 years ago. He obviously speaks Spanish natively, so it has definitely helped getting to talk to him a ton. We honestly probably speak 60% Spanish to each other, which it selfish on my part because he is trying to learn English! So we are both helping one-other and it's working out great. We got to go down to Eureka this week, and so we saw some fun sights!
Stephanie Sauerberg (Smith) was baptized 2 weeks ago, and it was awesome! Great ward support, and the confirmation was pretty special as well. We also started teaching her close friend Jennifer, and she (and soon her daughters, too) is set on baptismal date for late June! She even posted about it on Facebook after the lesson!
Went on some great exchanges in the Marina with Elder Steck. We biked around and had tons of fun contacting people like all day. This last week we went to MLC, and got to learn a lot about ministering. Specifically about caring for a certain person's needs, and helping them individually. Christ ministered with love, and that is what we are here to do as well!

We have been reading the BoM as a mission and we are just about through with 2nd Nephi. I have been learning a lot about how merciful the Lord is, that he truly gives us every possible chance to repent and come unto Him. His hand is outstretched all the day long, all we have to do is reach out and grab it through our obedience! Loving getting to read it so much and loving being a missionary where I am able to proclaim it's truth to all!
This week I was able to go on exchanges in the Sierra Spanish branch in Reno, and omg it was so much fun! I miss Spanish so much! I know the gift of tongues is real and that the Spirit brings things to our remembrance, because I was astonished with how not-garbage I was! I mean I wasn't perfect by any means, but honestly I haven't done the best job with keeping up on language study in this area so I thought it would be a lot worse. But it was so awesome to get to serve in a Spanish area again, even if just for a day!
Not much else happened here, went on a few great exchanges that I failed to get pictures of, but we had a lot of fun. Was in a biking area on Saturday, and it was a ton of fun! Biking all up and down the Stead area!

Elder Schloemer and I are doing awesome, and we are seeing tons of miracles out here in the blessed high deserts of Nevada!

Have a great week!

Elder Schloemer and I are having tons of fun up here in Stead and Cold Springs.
One of our investigators and her kids are gearing up and ready to get baptized, as well as a few more individuals who are currently considering their dates!

We found another bomb investigator who is so prepared. She just accepted a baptismal date in mid may, but turns out she actually doesn't live in our area! So we will be doing a pass off soon, yay free baptisms for other areas haha! No but it will be really good for that ward!

We have been running in the mornings and biking more often, so the weight should start falling off soon! Except our members keep giving us literal bags of cookies and muffins, soooooooo idk.
Anyway, not much else specific to mention. We as a mission are going to be reading the Book of Mormon in 65 days, and I am excited! It has so much power in it, and I am so grateful I can read it literally every day and feel uplifted by it! If you want to join me and my mission in this challenge, let me know!

In sadder news, Elder Torres is going home Wednesday! It has been a good 2 years for him and he has fought the good fight! It's been awesome to be his companion, though. There's always so much you learn from each companion, and I have gotten a lot from him.
Lot's of lessons, always staying busy. We found a couple more investigators thanks to some awesome member missionary work! We as well had zone conference, where we pretty much just helped everyone set up their smartphones. As of this week, every missionary in the Nevada, Reno Mission has a smartphone. Crazy!
I went on some awesome exchanges with Elder McGee that I forgot to get pictures for so my b!
But they were great. Reminded me of home, because we went to this trailer park and got to do some serious redneck-engineering! We got a massive boat off of a normal flatbed trailer onto a boat trailer on dry ground. Using hand winches, tires, and floor-jacks. It was pretty incredible! It felt like I was rebuilding the Provo City Center temple or something!
Then we were able to watch General Conference! That was so amazing! I felt so strongly that Russel M. Nelson is truly the prophet of God on the earth as we sustained him Saturday morning. Loved conference, and all of the changes are truly a testimony to me that the Lord is hastening his work, and is instituting a sort of "higher law" for the rising generation! It is a great day to be a missionary and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ on the earth today!

We got to watch one of the sessions with the Razo family, and they are doing super well! Well on their way toward baptism!

That's pretty much all folks!

Hope you have a great week, and happy Easter!

We found a new family to teach this week! A transfer ago we were on exchanges and we tried knocking on a less-active lady's door, but she wasn't home. As we were leaving, a young man named Chaison pulled up and we started talking! The lady had moved out, but Chaison was super interested! We gave him a pamphlet and a Book of Mormon and headed off. Well we weren't able to come back for our return appointment and we eventually lost contact, so we were bummed. But Elder Torres and I were in the area and we felt prompted to just swing by like on Tuesday. Well he was there and he had been reading the Book of Mormon! We came back the next day and had an amazing lesson with him and his girlfriend Laura! They are so prepared. Chaison is loving it and said he was so glad he let us come over! His name is pronounced like "Jason" but its spelled with a "CH" because he's "Chaison" the truth!!!
It has been a hectic last few days! So to start off, last Wednesday we had an amazing lesson with our investigators, Jennifer and Bailey, the one we gave the blessing to that doesn't have cancer now! Jennifer, the mom, has been really stressed out with trying to find a house in Cold Springs, but she said that after our lesson she was on like a spiritual high. We talked about the Restoration and specifically baptism by water and by fire (Holy Ghost) and she was soooo down. So she and her daughter Bailey (her other daughter Bodi soon, too!) have been set for baptism in April. We are going to keep working with them and see how things progress, they are so ready though! She said she is ready to grab on and never let go of the truth, and she's found it!
Another flipping crazy thing that happened is that on Friday, at MLC we were shown like 4 hours of video and training about how to use our new smartphones, after having no technology for a year and a half. We thought we were just gearing up for this next round of Zone Conference in which we would get them, but the office missionaries then came in with boxes of phones! So right now, I have a fully functioning Samsung Galaxy J7 in my pocket! This is insane. It's like a loaded gun with no safety! There is so much potential in store for these things, but I just wish they came with like training wheels or something. Its been so long without a phone. We have even been tasked with getting a Facebook account. That was gross. It is to be used to help with proselyting by networking with ward leaders, members, less-actives, investigators, etc. So don't friend request me unless you are planning on moving to northern Reno and investigating the Restored Gospel!

But it has been a lot of fun, and a big adventure. I am loving my mission and all of the amazing skills I am learning. Our President as well was resistant to this technology at first, but he came to the conclusion that if a missionary cannot learn how to use a smartphone with purpose and discipline in the mission, when will they? So I am glad for this opportunity to learn and grow.
It has been a pretty swell week this week! Honestly I cannot remember what happened like the first half other than District Meeting which went well, and thats kind of it. We had dinner with a member at IHOP, and when it came my time to order, I panicked and ordered a stack of 4 chocolate chip pancakes... So that was a fun sugar high. The member was just laughing. Speaking of sugar-highs we made fudge this week! Not really sure why lol. But we did it, and we gave some to our neighbors downstairs because they let us mooch off their wifi! Never thought I would be saying that on my mission, but it makes it so we don't have to go to the church every time we want to do something on our phones lol.
We had a pretty fun SPC (Stake Presidency Committee) meeting on Wednesday. the High Councilor, the guy in charge, just got that calling, so he had no idea what was going on. It was super funny, though, and we were still able to get some good out of it. We created our report on our phones and beamed it to the phones of the people in attendance, so that was beast. There is so much crazy potential with these things, its unreal! And only one person asked if I was already on Facebook this week! :(

Elder Doig got pretty sick this week. So we were inside for 2 days straight. That has never happened on my mission before and it was kind of terrible. We were able to get a lot done in terms of digitizing records and doing some good work online, but I longed for the open sky. I felt like an albino or something! But the oasis came and we were able to go to church and work all day yesterday.

First off, I will not be getting transferred! I will remain up here in Cold Springs/Silver Lake at least another transfer with Elder Doig an Elder Torres. This was actually unexpected, because rarely in this mission do companions stay together for more than 2 transfers, and this will be my 3rd with Elder Torres. It's ok, I am his best friend so I'm sure he will enjoy it!

As well, this is Elder Torres' last transfer in the MISSION, so that will be kind of scary. I have never "killed off" a missionary before, but I'm sure he will sprint to the finish, so to speak.

In other news, lot's of lessons and lot's of progression in our area. The Razo family came to church this week and that was an amazing miracle. I am so glad I get to stay another 6 weeks because I think we will likely have a few baptisms soon. Alex and Jennifer will be getting baptized/re-baptized within the next month most likely, and we will be setting the Razos with a date tonight! So pumped!

I know a lot more happened but to be honest I cannot really remember! One amazing miracle did happen last night, though. So we had been fasting yesterday, and I started feeling really sick, which usually doesn't happen, but we were like whatever. So we get to the long awaited dinner and it's some amazing lasagna with Texas toast prepared by my Guyanese mother, Sister Davis, and so obviously I scarf it up. Well apparently fasting and then binge eating don't go well together, so my previous light nausea and headache turn into like, "Holy Cow my insides are exploding let me die now pls" sickness. As well, side note, pretty much every last Sunday of the transfer, as part of our assignment we host a "Why I Believe" fireside where recent converts/returning less-actives share their testimony and conversion story. So dinner ends about an 30 minutes before we need to be at the stake center in Reno to set up for this fireside, and I am like rolling around on the ground dying. I lay down and take some pepto and pain killers but it really didn't seem to do much. Well some other missionaries came over to our apartment, as we were going to give them a ride to the fireside. Well I got the idea to do a priesthood blessing, so I ask the other two missionaries to administer to me. After they pronounced the healing blessing on my head, I stood up and was ready to go. The symptoms weren't entirely gone, but has almost totally and immediately subsided. For the remainder of the night I was able to function without concern, and again my testimony of the priesthood is re-confirmed. Miracles happen and the priesthood of God is alive and well on the earth today.

One last thing, another testament was given to me that we don't know always know what seeds we plant in the work of God! Two investigators Elder Jarnagin and I found by essentially knocking on a random door my last week in Gardnerville -- my first area -- were baptized this last week! I know that the Lord prepares people, and sometimes it is through us. That is why we cannot think that we aren't successful just because we don't see the outward results. No effort is wasted!

Anyway, not much else to cover! I am continuing to love this mission and the progression I am experiencing.
Basically we flipped over a bunch of tables and made a big battleground in the chapel gym. It was a blast! I don't have a nerf gun, but I just use a slingshot to shoot these little nerf balls. That is like the most fun thing ever, and it's surprisingly accurate. The hard part is just making sure you don't hit any Sisters in the face, 'cause those suckers sting.
It snowed like crazy up here! We had interviews on Thursday and we weren't sure if we were going to make it into town haha. Especially with Elder Torres driving! No but it wasn't that bad, probably about a foot we got. But it made things exciting and it makes for great impromptu snowball fights while proselyting.

We as well were able to go on exchanges with Elder Cardoza, and new missionary. So that was fun to get to help him out for the day.

One last thing. We had an amazing lesson with the Razo family this week. It was a super spiritual lesson. Lot's of crying haha. I guess that's what happens with 3 hispanic daughters and a stressed out mom. But the oldest daughter, Mayra, was reading Moroni 10:3-5 in the Book of Mormon and goes, "OH!" and we were like, what does "oh" mean? And she's like, "the holy ghost is manifesting itself to me right now! like so I know that the book is true!" We had like a total internal freak out because that's awesome! Her sisters are working on getting their answers too! But we are planning setting them up for baptism really soon! Miracles are everywhere in the work of the Lord.
We are loving it and are shooting for a few baptisms by the end of this transfer. The work is moving along!
Elder Doig, our new companion, is loving it up here. He is a somewhat new missionary (we're not training him), and so he is learning to get out of his comfort zone recently.

One thing I learned this last week is that any progression is good progression! Whether it be with investigators, other missionaries, or even ourselves, if we are getting better than we are progressing. We won't be perfect in this life, but we can be perfect in trying!
We were suuuper busy this week. Like every day we have hit the pillow exhausted. And astonished that these days, even weeks, are flying by! One awesome highlight is that we got to go to the temple this week! That is just like the best thing for a missionary. I felt rejuvenated and re-energized!
We received transfer information this week. Elder Torres and I will be staying together, but we will be receiving a another missionary, Elder Doig! We are excited to see how we can help him out!

We had a Why I Believe fireside this week that was pretty awesome. Tons of great testimonies, including one by a returning less active that we've been teaching, Brother Brown. We have been teaching a lot of less actives and one family, the Moores, have been coming to church since we started teaching them. They love the ward and the ward loves them!
Nothing much else to report. Continuing to learn that love is the most important attribute a leader can have.
Have a great week!Elder Nick Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16578029561767997811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4716067457037633598.post-52624161438476376482018-01-16T18:56:00.002-08:002018-01-16T18:56:35.399-08:00A Week of LearningWe have had a very busy week this week.

Wednesday we had interviews with the entire zone. Something our mission does is the Zone Leaders interview every companionship of the zone for 30 minutes, so we're basically there as long as President is haha. It was a lot of fun, and I learned so much being able to minister to so many people. A few of the interviews were very powerful as well, as we had to help a companionship or two overcome some issues. The Spirit was definitely felt! One thing I learned from serving in this capacity these last few transfers is that as we minister (or attend to the needs of another) to those around us, we need to do it 1 by 1, and do it with love. We must show them we love them before we offer any suggestions for improvement. Noticing good qualities and skills is far more important and valuable that noticing flaws. When corrections need occur, however, they should be done gently and with love, and by the Spirit! I am so grateful I can be here in the Nevada, Reno Mission and learn so much from this sacred calling as a missionary!

On a less "sacred" note, we almost were destroyed by an attack rooster this week.
On Friday, we were biking around Cold Springs when we came across this one Less-Actives house.

We go to turn in the driveway, and we see a very stoic, very ominous rooster standing in the middle of the driveway like a statue. So we get off our bikes and go up towards the door, but the rooster starts to get a little defensive and coming towards us slowly, so we keep our distance and make a plan. We have heard from some members how deadly these things can be(razor-sharp talons and what-not), so I didn't want to take any chances. I started getting it's attention and kiting it over to me a little, and then Elder Torres snuck behind and went to knock on the door. He didn't get more than a few bangs in before that satan-bird turns around and starts slowly joggin towards him. As the avian-from-heck starts to get closer, he puffs up his feathers all big like (his jimmies had been thoroughly rustled) and starts making weird attack-rooster noises. It jumps up on the porch right next to Elder Torres, so he get spooked and starts kinda running around it toward me, and the little feller knows its on, so he starts picking up the pace to chase of my companion lol. So we high-tail it to our bikes and get outta there before that Chicken-Devil got out it's twelve-gauge.

So that's pretty much been our week! Keeping real busy and seeing miracles! Hope everyone has a good one! Love you all!

(sorry, I forgot my camera, more pics next week!)Elder Nick Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16578029561767997811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4716067457037633598.post-39166537760239762102018-01-11T07:27:00.000-08:002018-01-11T07:27:13.147-08:00Week of RefinementWell this week has been interesting!

I'll just keep it short and say that things have been up and down, as it goes with missionary work!

One of the "downs" was obviously the passing of President Monson. He was an amazing prophet and did so many amazing things in his lifetime service to the Lord.
You know, that was also an "up", too. Because we know that that was not the end of his progression, nor will it be for us! Life moves on, another prophet is called, and the Lord's work will go forward.

View in Susanville

Another "up" I had was that I got to go spend a day and a half with Elder Bell in Susanville, California. That was fun! Lot's of cool miracles up there and tons of opportunity to minister to that district. It kinda stinks because they are pretty isolated up there (3 companionships), so when they get to see someone else once a transfer they lose it lol.

Overall there were a lot of positive things. Trials are definitely here to help us grow, though. That is one thing I know for sure! I am actually very grateful for the times when we are tried and refined. We would never be better people if we didn't learn to grow and repent.

Another view from Susanville

I am working on memorizing "The Living Christ" right now so that is fun! It's actually a blast and comes easier than you would think!

We are working with a lot of less-actives in Cold Springs, and it brings me so much joy to see them progress. A LA family just came to church yesterday and it is always so special to see the ward wrap their arms around them.

Not much else to report. Hope everyone has a great week!

God bless our prophet dear!

One of my favorite Thomas S. Monson quotes that I use a lot in missionary work:
"Never let a problem to be solved be more important that a person to be loved"Elder Nick Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16578029561767997811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4716067457037633598.post-55007913073497601882018-01-05T06:34:00.000-08:002018-01-05T06:34:33.750-08:00Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!Hope everyone had some awesome holidays! Ours were pretty rad.

First off, Christmas was amazing! I received a metric-crap-ton of candy, and some nice pants, which are in facts mutually exclusive, so I gave most of the candy away to other missionaries, members' kids, the homeless, etc. Now I can actually fit into the pants.

On Christmas night we got together and watched MOANA as a zone! Dang I wanna be poly now! No but it was awesome, and then we got to do a white-elephant gift exchange. That was a ton of fun as well.

Also, as a Christmas present, we received an amazing referral from family up in Cold Springs!
A classic member-missionary situation where a young woman from the Cold Springs ward invited her friend Khami (sounds like Cami) to take the lessons! We taught her in the home of the members and every member of the family, even the 10 year old, was contributing and testifying to her! She has really just planted that seed of faith but we are so excited to see it grow.
